Their confident behaviour, distinctive appearance, and habit of using open perches make them rewarding subjects – especially when patience results in a clean background and a well-composed image.

A young Black Redstart that had only recently left the nest gave me a wonderful opportunity for some close-up bird photography. Soft late-afternoon light, a green garden background and a surprisingly fearless little bird made the encounter particularly memorable.

An unplanned afternoon in the garden turned into a challenging photography session when a pair of pigeons caught my attention. Photographing them in flight wasn’t easy, but among the missed shots were a few images that made the effort worthwhile.
